Masters v Kingsway
Glorious conditions greeted the Wembley Masters as we ventured up the freeway to the vast expanse of Arena Joondalup. With pre-warning from Sarge to slap on some sunscreen and hydrate the boys prepared themselves for a big game against a usually competitive Kingsway. Big thanks to Prindi and Mike for strapping on the boots twice in one day to help us field a full team.
1st qtr
From the very first bounce of the game big Cogs asserted his ruck dominance winning a free kick as the opposing ruckman knew he had no chance to compete in the air, the umpire was onto his dodgy tactics and gave us free passage to our “somewhat” mobile forward line. Rowney showed his standard bulldog strength and determination distributing the pill, even if he was only on one leg.
BOM was elusive and used his superior fitness to get to multiple contests, resulting in three snags for the day. Kingsway held up under a constant barrage of entries, and due to some inaccurate kicking (yours truly included) went into quarter time only a few goals down.
2nd qtr
A couple of genius tactical moves by Sarge with the magnets at quarter time, such as switching the full back and full forward completely bamboozled Kingsway. A steady flow of goals ensued in the second quarter. The Wembley mids continued to wreak havoc, even with Wal deciding he would help the opposition by kicking it 30m the wrong way onto the chest of the Kingsway CHF, onya Wal. Apart from that minor indiscretion Wal was very solid until his paper thin hammy gave way in the second half. Brock didn’t miss a target on both feet with his unconventional ball drop and defensive stalwarts Plonk and Shane were providing plenty of options out of the backline to give Wembley the clear advantage at halftime.
3rd qtr
BP bounced back to his reliable self in the second half, a couple of dropped marks in the first half were very un-BP like. Wembley had supreme athletes in various positions that Kingsway simply couldn’t contain. Jimmy on the wing with his sublime left foot, Joffa putting his troublesome hamstrings on notice with pinpoint kicks all day, Prindi turned back the clock to 1985 and showed off his trademark touch and panache. Marcus eased his way back into form from a hamstring injury with a couple of 40m lasers out of defence . New recruit big Brad was a reliable target all day. His unintentional torpedo from 30m out directly in front kept us and the opposition guessing what else was in his bag of tricks.
4th qtr
With the final quarter under way most of us just wanted to get through unscathed so we could knock down a cold beer after the game.
Pistol was his tenacious self, don’t think he lost a contest and also managed to get through without a yellow card, always a bonus.
DC was lined up against an opponent who was probably double his weight, he played his usual selfless role impeccably. One unfortunate play had Sarge and myself chasing a 65 year old Kingsway player out on the far wing, he was making the gap on us larger which made me realise any athletic talent I may of had was long gone (only speaking for myself here Sarge). A few more goals and a few easy misses punctuated the last quarter but an even all round team performance saw the Wembley masters comfortably take home the imaginary 4 points on the day. Another enjoyable Sunday arvo spent with your mates.

Seniors v Quinss Bulls
Well, what a game..
– That was a game? – I thought the old folks home were putting an a pageant, I knew I should have brought my tazer
A tremendous contest at HBF arena
– Isn’t it Pentanet stadium?
And a huge chance to impress the ghosts of Les Fong, Corey Bewick, Bill Valli, Alan Watling, Ros Prunster, Phil Bradmore etc
– I think those blokes are younger than the ones who played
I think the Wembley boys got up today
– It was Quinn’s day
It was a beautiful day for a game of footy, but It’s a daunting task running out on such a big ground when you’re north of 50
– Did someone run, I missed it…
The game started well for Wembley, Moose won the tap, a quick surge forward and a Eppo snap
– The guy can barely kick so yeah, that’s a win
What did u make of Sarge lining up for the bulls
– Loved it – best move Wembly made all day
Common – Sarge dominated for Quinns, his battle with Prindi was a highlight
– More broken tackles than a Brereton family do
Gez those two can use the ball, Prindi scored some ripper goals – in a word – elusive, available and accurate.
– That’s three words
Wembly’s backline held up well today, Drew, Simmo, some fantastic aerial contests and their clearing kicks were a constantly hitting up teammates
– Simmo’s hair looked good
Youngie did well again today, he gets a lot of the ball and always uses it well
– Can we call him something else?
How well did Brynna play today. He was playing on an absolute gun, on the hardest position of the field and his battle was first class and simply relentless, didn’t give him an inch – best match up of the day, worth the admission price alone..
– Surely no-one payed to watch this?
Ben Powell is the heart and soul of this club – played all games again this week – Mr reliable again today, mopping up down back as he always does
– Well the supers had a bye so he only played 8 quarters today..lets not go nuts
I think there’s a good case to mount that A.J is Wembley’s best player – when you’re a contested player like him and have a left foot as sweet as his – loved Wattsie’s call to have him up forward today – you need the cream near the goals.
– That wasn’t cream I keep telling u
Speaking of – I think Wattsie has coached really well this year, he enjoyed the wide open spaces of Provident Financial oval today, got his usual ton of ball and rarely misses
– The man’s a legend
The Spaceman – played a perfect HFF game today, always seems to have more time than everyone else – he actually commented afterwards that he liked the bigger ground, there weren’t too many forward forays where he either wasn’t directly involved, or making space..
– Well I agree with you on this one – there weren’t to many forward forays
Magic took on CHF today as he has always done – you can’t not kick to the guy – he’s always leading, always marking, always creating and when it hits the ground – he’s one the fastest guys out there – layed about 24 tackles today – and the word is he weighed his socks – the consummate professionalthey even switched him on the ball in the last quarter
– Sorry, I thought u said he weighed his socks
Speaking of forward craft
– No-one was speaking of forward craft
Mario took the best mark of the match today – his last quarter clutch was a contested beast – and the umpire called touched – Both the kicker and the player who was supposed to have touched it called bullshit on that call.
– It was a ripper – sorry ump no feel for the game on that one
But the winner of the contested mark crown today was Ian Boothy booth – 15 was my count – the hardest thing in football he seemed to make it look easy
– You can’t count
I loved Bretto’s game today – his last quarter goal was a treat to behold – just kept going, 47 bounces, 17 broken tackles – ran 160 metres..
– Sorry are we done yet
But they say the game is won and lost out of middle
– It was lost – number 10 and Sarge murdered u
Moose – he’s just too big and strong – can put the ball on a dime – a big presence on the field – he was a treat to watch today – Moose? – is that his name – are we in a national lampoons movie?
Eppo – did a lot of running today and snapped a quick goal, he was playing in runners today
– Perhaps he should stick to little aths, he missed another straight in front, gave away a fifty, had about 28 unsuccessful tackles and crawled off with hurt little pinky
Mikey is the perfect onballer – always there abouts and always doing something creative
– That’s nice
But the best player today was Ray Werners – just won contested ball all over the ground, no-one could actually tackle him and he just created play all day.
– Can I grab a lift home? Big Friday game this week – cannot wait..
– They actually turn on the lights for these blokes?
